Discipline is practiced by dominants and consists of the use of rules and limitations that, if broken, can bring about repercussions. Humiliation can be psychological such as verbal punishment or physical such as spanking or being forced to stand in a corner. It can include loss of privileges or doing a task over and over again. Rules can be implemented as a further form of discipline. The rules regulate and control the submissive.
It is important that the rules not be broken, as it is important to know that the rules can change at the sound of a word. The main use of punishment for breaking a rule is bondage. Privileges like having an orgasm may be taken away if a rule is broken.
It is also important to point out that, for every person who feels disciplined for an action being done against them, others feel rewarded, and cherish the discipline given to them as a gift of sorts.

There are many different types of physical punishment used to enforce discipline. It is done deliberately (with full consent) and can cause pain. Physical punishment is usually connected with breaking a very important rule and is not something done without justification.

Punishment is seen as being a ritual and has specific guidelines about how it is supposed to be carried out. A dominant knows what he/she will punish the subordinate with depending on what situation they are in and what the infraction was.
