[edit] Definition
Edge play offers new challenges to the play that a dominant and submissive are already familiar with. This can be types of play that are right on the brink of surpassing what is Safe, Sane, and Consensual. Edge play differs from straight out BDSM because it can be nonconsensual. It is also, in a sense, guided by society’s consideration to what is on the edge or fringe. At one point, full leather outfits were considered to be edgy and not a part of the boundaries of society. Now leather can be seen anywhere from fetish lifestyles to the mainstream. Edge play lingers between the fetish world, the mainstream world, and beyond them both, encompassing aspects from both extremes.
[edit] Safety Concerns
Some forms of edge play are considered illegal, and even a written consent will not hold up in a court of law if something happens to the submissive involved. Some risks can include:
- Serious, permanent harm, even death.
- Increased risk of contracting a disease.
- Psychological damage.
- Social taboos.
- Controversial topics such as arranged rape, total power exchange, abduction scenes, etc.
