Definition
Fire play is a type of BDSM that requires lighting 50% to 70% ethanol alcohol on the skin. The alcohol forms a very thin barrier between itself and the skin, and burns until it is dissipated. Things like flash cotton, votive candles, and hot paraffin can also be used as an alternative to the ethanol. Because the fire only burns on the flammable liquid, it isn’t as dangerous as one might assume. Though depending on the intensity, it can leave permanent marks on the skin, which can sometimes be the goal. This is considered a form of branding.
Types
- Bouncing – Fire batons are used in this method and are bounced back and forth from one hand to the other.
- Fire Cupping – Said to have predated acupuncture, fire-cupping materials are often found in some Asian markets. Fire cupping involves heating the air within a cup, and then placing it over the skin. This creates a vacuum that tugs and pulls up on the skin. This can be both a fetish and a homeopathic remedy.
Safety
Fire play is very dangerous if done incorrectly. If too little alcohol is applied to the skin or the flame is left burning for too long on the skin serious burning can occur. It is important to know that the skin is an organ and if damaged too greatly can easily get infected, resulting in permanent injury or even death.
