La Nouvelle Justine is an expanded version of Justine, a 187-page novella written by the Marquis de Sade. Published in 1797, it was accompanied by a sequel, Juliette, which told the story of Justine’s sister. Together the two formed 10 volumes spanning nearly 4000 pages. Publication was completed in 1801 and once finished it also included around 100 engravings. The story revolves around Justine, a 12 year old, who sets off on a journey to France. Along the way she gets raped, abused and is involved in countless orgies and other depravities.

History
These works were originally published anonymously but his publisher revealed the Marquis as the writer when Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the arrest of the anonymous author. Napoleon deemed Justine “the most abominable book ever engendered by the most depraved imagination," and as a result the Marquis spent 13 years in prison.
