Definition
Natural latex is a substance collected from the back of the rubber tree, Hevea brasilensis, originally from Brazil, though it can also be made synthetically. Latex can be found in many products, most commonly in condoms. It is also often used in fetish clothing. Unlike rubber, latex is often less refined and thinner, giving it a skin-tight or “second skin” effect. It is also preferred over rubber for its shinier effect. Latex can also come in liquid form, which is then painted onto the body to give it an even tighter effect.
Health Concerns
Like rubber there are some people who may be highly allergic to latex and any exposure to latex products can cause an anaphylactic shock. Some allergic reactions to latex may actually come from residues of other ingredients used to process it and not the actual latex itself. Symptoms of latex allergies include itchy, red, watery eyes, sneezing or runny nose, coughing, rash or hives, chest tightness and shortness of breath. If you think you might be allergic to latex see your physician before covering yourself in it.

In the 1870s latex was collected from wild trees in the jungles of Brazil. However by 1890, Britain had introduced rubber plantations in Malaysia as a way to harvest latex.
