Leather is a material made from the tanning of hides and skins of animals, particularly cattle. Leather is used like any fabric to make clothing and coverings. However, like furs, it is often under constant scrutiny from animal rights activists who see the use of leather as cruel. Leather is a popular material in fetish garments and there are many who are attracted to people wearing leather or to the garments themselves. Leatherwear is highly lusted after in the gay community, particularly those who label themselves as bears. This specific group of homosexual males characterize themselves by their leather garments.

The use of leather for clothing has been around since primitive man. Hunters would often remove the hides and skins from the dead animals and use them as tents, clothing and footwear. The earliest record of the use of leather dates from the Palaeolithic period; cave paintings discovered in caves near Lerida in Spain depict the use of leather clothing.
