[edit] Definition
Donatien Alphonse Francois de Sade, commonly referred to as the Marquis de Sade, was a French aristocrat, revolutionary, philosopher, writer and violent pornographer. He was a strong believer in extreme freedom, unrestrained by morality, religion or law. To him nothing was more important than the pursuit of personal pleasure. The Marquis de Sade spent 32 years of his life incarcerated. Nineteen of those years were spent in various prisons and thirteen in the Charenton insane asylum. During his imprisonment the Marquis wrote countless novels, novellas, essays, letters, plays and political pamphlets, many of which are still studied today. Numerous writers and artists, especially those with an interest in sexuality, have been both repelled and fascinated by his writings. Some of his most popular works include Juliette, The 120 Days of Sodom, Incest and The Crimes of Love.

[edit] History
It is said that the Marquis led a scandalous life and repeatedly abused young prostitutes as well as employees of both sexes in his castle in Lacoste. The term “sadism” is derived from his name.
