Definition
A munch is a casual lunch or dinner for people who practice or are interested in BDSM. Munch groups have different points of focus depending on where they’re held. Often locations will be chosen so that a demonstration can be given. This gathering is also a time for people to learn new and different techniques. Unlike Public Play, munch gatherings are extremely casual and are held at restaurants or bars. Traditional BDSM clothing at these events is not required. Some munches may have a specific focus or may be limited to specific groups like women or submissives.

History
Munch gatherings became popular in the very early 90s, before the use of the Internet to meet like-minded individuals. Back then social groups began to organize informal meetings at various Kirk’s Steakburgers in Palo Alto, California. These restaurants were known for their great burgers and spacious patios, which allowed for some privacy. The gatherings became known among the members as “burger munch,” which was later changed to “munch” when they began to occur at other locations.
