Definition
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a widely used thermoplastic polymer that is often used as a building material because it is cheap, durable and easy to assemble. In recent years PVC has replaced traditional building materials like wood, concrete and clay. PVC can be made softer and more flexible by the addition of plasticizers. In this form it is often used in fetish clothing. PVC clothing is rising in popularity, rivaling latex as popular fetish gear.
Health Concerns
Health concerns in PVC are related to the chemicals used, especially in the plasticizers that must be added to make it flexible. Some studies have found higher rates of testicular cancers and a rare form of liver cancer among workers in PVC plants. These cancer-causing chemicals and lead, the nerve-damaging metal often added to PVC, have contaminated water, soil and air around these facilities, which are often located in poor communities.

History
PVC was accidentally discovered on at least two occasions in the 19th century but it wasn’t until the early 20th century that it began to be used in commercial products with little success. Then in 1926, Waldo Semon developed a way to plasticize PVC by blending it with various additives. It is now used in everything from toys to vinyl siding.
