Similar to puppy play, pony play is a form of BDSM in which a human pretends to be a pony. Pony play can vary between participants but the most popular type includes riding. In this form of pony play the ponies are ridden either while on all fours or on two legs, with the rider on the shoulders of the pony. Cart ponies are similar to riding ponies except that in this form of play the ponies pull a sulky with their owners. Show ponies are also a popular form of playing. Show ponies are usually paraded around, showing off their dressage skills and elaborate harnesses. Pony play doesn’t have to include sex. It’s all about the role-playing and the feeling of ownership over the person acting as the pony.

Safety Concerns

With pony play, since the pony isn’t to speak, there are safety gestures agreed upon by the pony and the trainer to alert if something is going wrong. And if you feel your pony shaking, that is a good indicator that play should stop for the moment to ensure the safety of the submissive. It is fine to be firm with the pony, but never sadistic, considering the damage that can be done to the pony. Afterwards, care should be taken to comfort the pony in whatever way you see fit. Considering the amount of training and work goes into pony training, the pony should take good care in their diet and exercise to try to prevent injury. Along with these guidelines, normal BDSM practices should be taken into consideration, i.e.~ Safe, Sane, Consensual.
