Definition
The Japanese art of rope bondage. Normally, a rope made of natural fibers such as linen or hemp is used to make the bindings. This type of bondage has a strong basis on the visual appearance of the bindings. Great care is taken to make intricate patterns with the rope on the body. Shibari was first used to punish criminals or enemies in Japan. The bindings were done in a certain way and with a certain color rope to specify what crime was committed by the bound criminal. It wasn’t until later that it became widely known as a sexual type of bondage. In the 1960’s is when Shibari became a performance art in Japan. The nawashi(rope artist) would tie up, torture, and suspend either a dorei(slave) or a girl from the audience. You will see that participants in Shibari like to use asymmetrical bondage patterns to heighten psychological impact of the bindings. Kinbaku is the technical term for the Japanese bondage.
