Definition
Urethral Sounds are smooth, long, and thin surgical steel rods that are inserted into the urethra and used to stretch out or dilate the urethra. This is a fetish practice linked to Medical Play as doctors use sounding procedures on patients.
Use
In a non-medical setting they are used for urethral stretching, and for prostate stimulation that is purportedly very pleasurable.
The sound is covered in sterile lube, inserted into the urethra opening and slid backwards toward the bladder. Sounds come in various widths, lengths and shapes. Some people used them to dilate the urethra, while other try to see how far they can insert them. Others just like the feeling of having something inside them. This can also be used in power play as it can cause feelings of violation and submission.
Safety Concerns
Using objects that are not designed to be inserted into the body can be very dangerous, and cause serious damage that could lead to death. There is a risk of cutting the skin inside the body, which is why you should only use tools designed for urethral insertion. Water-based sterile lube should be used to aid insertion of sounds. Do not use lubes that contain nonoxynol-9 or flavored lubes, as both will irritate the urethra. Oil-based lubes are more difficult to expel when you're done, so it is recommended that you do not use these either.
Make sure everything you are using is sterile. Use latex gloves, clean all items that will be used, especially those entering the body. Cleaning of sounds can be done with an autoclave. It is not recommended that you use anything else unless you can be sure that a method of sterilization is safe.
Be careful not to let go of the sound once it's inserted, when the sound is inserted more than 4 inches, the sound will usually rotate slightly and pull the rest of the sound down. Should the sound be totally inserted into the urethra and you lose grip, don't panic and relax - the sound will come out naturally.
IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY PROBLEMS DO NOT HESITATE TO CALL AN EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE OR GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AT YOUR LOCAL HOSPITAL.
If you develop an infection, experience any severe pain, or notice any sort of abnormality call your doctor immediately.
Urination after the sound is removed is highly encourage as this will expel any particles or bacteria that may have entered the urethra.
Keep in mind that urethral play does irritate the urethra. If you have any penetrative sex or oral sex afterwards, use a condom.
Types
Urethral sounds come in a variety of styles, and are used in slightly different ways:
Dittel sounds: have a flat end and a rounded end.
Hegar sounds: have two rounded ends, are fairly short, and are mildly curved in shape. Hegar sounds are typically the least expensive sounds on the market. These sounds are the most safe and comfortable for the female anatomy.
Henk sounds: have a more pronounced curve at the ends, as well as a metal rib on each end.
Pratt sounds: are longer urethral dilators (double ended ones are usually almost a foot long) with rounded and slightly bent ends. Many men enjoy them for sounding.
Van Buren sounds: have a very pronounced curve at each end, specifically for the purpose of reaching the bladder.
